Health Problems of Pets

Pets are like a family to the people who keep them. They are loyal, lovable, and full of life. Pets can help in reducing stress and making your life happy. But, at times, when your pet is not well, it feels as if the whole house has become silent. In this post, I am going to list out some of the common health problems from which different pets suffer.
  • Dogs and infection in the ear
Dogs are faithful companions who will never leave your side under any circumstance. But when they get an ear infection, their energy seems lost. This may be due to allergy, ear mites, bacteria, and the growth of hair in the inner ear, and so on. The common symptoms are head shaking, ear scratching, lack of balance, ear odour, and many more. In such cases, you need to consult a veterinarian immediately. The vet will either give ear drops or suggest some painkillers to subside the infection. In case of severe infection, surgery is recommended.
  • Cats and Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV)
Cats are easily infected with this virus as it is transmittable RNA retrovirus which enters into its immune system. This disease if not treated at the early stage can cause death. Every cat should be tested with this virus immediately. Young kittens less than one year are susceptible to this virus. If a cat is made to stay with another cat that has been infected by this virus, then there are chances of getting an infection. FeLV weakens the cat’s immune system.

Due to this, the cat is exposed to other diseases such as anaemia, kidney diseases or lymphosarcoma. The symptoms of this disease are the loss of appetite, weight loss, pale gums, diarrhoea, fever, abscesses, changes in behaviour, poor condition of coat, and much more. The best way to prevent this infection is by vaccinating the kitten at the young age and keeping it away from other cats that might have this infection.
  • Guinea pigs and respiratory infections
Guinea pigs are very small and cute pets. They prefer living in dark and cool places and will find their own place in your home. They spend most of the time roaming outside, and hence, are exposed to air which has particles in it. Guinea pigs are prone to develop respiratory infections such as in nose, throat, or lungs. The symptoms of infection are the refusal to eat food, no faeces, wheezing, sneezing, coughing, crusty eyes, receding eyes, discharge from the eyes and nose, lethargy, and so on. The symptoms are quite similar to that of an allergy. But, if you find any of these symptoms you need to rush to the doctor immediately as this may aggravate further. The vet will suggest keeping the guinea pig in a place where there is minimal exposure to dust particles and give some antibiotics.

These are some of the common diseases in the various pet animals. All you need is a good vet to tackle the diseases and bring your pet back to form. St Alban’s vets are doing a great job in giving the best treatment to the pets. They have taken pet treatment one step ahead and are carrying out all the advanced surgeries.
